It was established by the Santa Catalina Island Company to take advantage of the clay deposits discovered by William Wrigley, Jr. and David M. Renton and, more importantly, to use these to help reduce construction costs on the Island by producing building materials locally. Catalina Island is home to 22 Sensitive Ecological Areas as well as 26 endemic plant species. The Catalina Island Tile and Pottery factory operated from 1927 to 1937. The monument is such a cool place to visit. There are remarkable details around the structure. Wrigley played a huge role in the history and conservation of Catalina Island. Catalina Island has a focus on conservation, and a lot of the efforts were led by Wrigley. I grew up on Catalina, but only recently learned about this slice of history. In August 1972, a Chicano-rights group called the Brown Berets camped out on Catalina Island for three weeks, demanding that its almost 42,000 acres of undeveloped land be turned into housing.
