Lathe Approvals

The following manufacturers recommend the machining (Skimming) of brake discs on the vehicle:

Daihatsu / Ferrari / GM / VW / Porsche / Lexus / BMW / Ford / Honda / Jaguar / Landrover / Nissan / Peugeot / Citroen / Mazda / Subaru / Toyota / Kia / Hyundai / Proton / Suzuki / Isuzu / Rover / Mercedes / Fiat / Chrysler / Alfa Romeo / Lancia / Infiniti / Volvo / Mitsubishi / Seat / Knorr-Bremse / BPW / & MAN

There are around 1500 on vehicle brake disc lathes in the UK – the vast majority sold by our very own Guy Carter. Worldwide there are 50,000 units of the MAD machines in daily use. In Germany MAD have 4000 machines in daily use compared with Pro-Cut at under 1000 units – The Germans like good gear and that’s why the MAD has exclusive Mercedes AMG approval. MAD are the world leaders in this technology.

Here is what the VM’s  have to say:

  • Mercedes AMG – “The only on vehicle lathe approved by Mercedes Benz is the MAD range”
  • GM “brake pulsation will develop when tolerances of the hub and disc exceed 0.08mm after 3000-7000 miles”  GM highly recommends the use of an on car lathe to eliminate the run-out”
  • Toyota – “we strongly recommend that a MAD on car brake disc lathe is used for repairing brake vibration and pulsation”
  • Peugeot – “ if a vehicle has been issued to a dealer with corroded discs a claim will be considered for repairing them with an on car brake disc lathe”
  • Porsche – “ a brake disc lathe is now mandatory for all 3 star workshops”
  • BMW – “ this on car brake disc lathe is ideal for low cost repairs on vehicles with heavily corroded discs”
